If it will pass smog, sell it. We are in OC and just this week bought a 2002 BMW on Craigslist for $1000. My husband is a mechanic and not afraid to replace the engine, etc. There are plenty like him.
If it doesn't pass smog but still runs, then consider the Cash for Clunkers program. California Cash for Clunkers Program . You have to be able to drive it to one of their locations and it has to have been registered in CA for the past two years, but does NOT need to pass smog. We did this a couple of years ago and got $1000; we could not have sold the car to an individual for that much.
The website I linked above also has useful information about selling an old car.
What kind of MECHANIC PROBLEMS does the car have? Maybe its because you live in Los Angeles but 1.1k for a 2003 Ford Mustang is pretty dam cheap. I was thinking it would be worth 4 or 5k in fair condition.

There are no mechanic problems that I know of. I've done a tune-up in August.
It passed smog in early September, and registration extended in September too.
It only has some cosmetic stuff and issues with that headline, some turn lights, ABS light recently came on, and front breaks are almost non-existent. I'm still driving it every daily without a single problem, and would def continue driving if I didn't have to move. I bought it from a dealership exactly 2 years ago for $3.5k or so.
So you think $1k-$1.5k would be a fair price then?
Give it to charity and take the tax break, using the $1.1K figure or a higher figure if you can find another appraisal site,
You don't get to chose how much tax write off you will get, they use a figure in a book and you will be surprised how small that number is. If the vehicle is values a $1.1 in KBB, you might be able to get a few hundred dollar write off. The IRS isn't big on giving away their income. I have done it twice and they amount they allow will shock you.
The vehicle being described should be an easy sell, if KBB values it at $1100 and it is in very poor condition, it should still sell quickly for half of that, better than attempting to write it off.
I would put it up for sale for $1000.00, and let the market set the price, in other words, start high and see what kind of offers you get...
