I did cut it up, but it was on top of previous stickers, and someone scraped them all off.

Should I superglue the stickers next time, or remove previous ones? Which is better (I probably can't do both)

Remove the previous ones, then put the new one on, and cut slits through it with a razor blade so it cannot be peeled off in one piece. Piling them up makes it far easier to steal.

Pretty sure the ones we have self destruct if you try and peel them off, of course if you peeled off layers of them that won't help.

They are doing away with the stickers here in PA, don't need them in this day and age.

Buy a translucent plastic cover shield for the license plate. It makes it more difficult for a crook to get at your registration sticker.

They will likely leave your car alone and go on to find an easier target.

I read somewhere that the thieves tape over the cut sticker and then peel it off (maybe using a knife).

I wonder if superglue is better (but then I probably won't be able to remove the previous stickers without a lot of effort)

What wants to be stolen - will be stolen. Entire license plate. Then cut stickers out for whatever use. I agree that trying to peel tab off simply renders it useless, as it layers and tears.
Honestly, in 33 yrs in the country, 1st time I hear about tab stolen. Though it makes at least some sense.
I say, bite the bullet, as it costs, get new one and don't really do much special about it.

Thats a good idea. Here, we have done away with the inspection sticker on the windshield.

Since the sticker (usually) comes with the registration card, couldn't you use that card to prove you registered the car and get a new sticker at no charge?
