Tariffs will always reduce competitiveness and quality of domestic cars. Remember the days in the 80s and 90s when all the domestic manufacturers did patriotic advertisements and advertising cars "made in america", because they had no other sales argument for their crappy cars.

Only a market with high competitveness will lead to the best product at the best price for the customer. It is america who stands for open market and free trade, whereas Soviet Russia was the protectionist and isolated part. Now compare their products. The fact that a lot of European and Asian cars are pushing into the American market is the only reason that US manufacturers have good and competitive cars today.

Of COURSE this is a political thread.

And OF COURSE it's filled with statements that aren't accurate.

And OF COURSE people don't even know what Trump's policy was/is and just think they do. Just reading media headlines and watch political ads.

And OF COURSE nobody is taking his policies in their totality but individually as if they stand alone.

And OF COURSE nobody even KNOWS what is going on or is proposed with trade and EXISTING tariffs. Why isn't anyone discussing the TPP? Because they don't even KNOW about it?

  • The Trans-Pacific Partnership will undermine our economy, and it will undermine our independence:
  • The TPP creates a new international commission that makes decisions the American people can't veto, making it easier for our trading competitors to ship cheap subsidized goods into U.S. markets - while allowing foreign countries to continue putting barriers in front of our exports.
  • The TPP lowers tariffs on foreign cars, while leaving in place the foreign practices that keep American cars from being sold overseas. The TPP even creates a backdoor for China to supply car parts for automobiles made in Mexico.

I don't think you've been following the issue at all.

The TPP, which was GUARANTEED to pass before Donald Trump's focus on it, has just been announced as DEAD IN THE WATER by Chuck Schumer
himself.

The TPP even allowed foreign companies to bring their company here WITH THEIR ENTIRE WORKFORCE, for goodness sakes.

So YEAH, things have changed big league.

Donald Trump and the American citizens have set the agenda in Washington DC and the world. And we should all be grateful that for ONCE, someone is putting America first. And REFUSING to give up our sovereignty to foreign unelected bureaucrats pushing us into a new world order.

Yep. Sure am.

A little study of American history might help. It's a good slogan though.

Protectionist tariffs don't work.
As soon as the US puts a tariff up - then the other countries put a tariff up (or more of a tariff).

The US has these trade deals to SELL American goods to other countries.
If he slows US goods being sold overseas and to other countries - we will fall into a recession.

And note:
On average - the US has had a recession every 7 years.
Guess what's coming up?

Since World War II.
Recessions:

1945
1949
1953
1958
1961
1969
1973
1980
1990
2001
2007

The national debt is $20 trillion dollars.
That $20 trillion dollars is his after January 20.
And he is going to cut taxes AND pay down the debt?
The annual national deficit in FY 2015 was $439 billion dollars.
That $439 billion dollars is his after January 20.
And he is going to cut taxes?

He can reshuffle the deck chairs on the Titanic as much as he wants. But the ship is still sinking.

Those that voted for him live in a fantasy world of slogans and promises.

That was Trump's main talking point though.

Other countries have tariffs on American goods,so why can't we?

Here he is in 1988 on Oprah talking about Japanese cars.

As for the original question...if a tariff were slapped on my next Toyota, I guess I would just have to pay it. Hell, it would probably still be cheaper than paying to keep a damned Ford or GM car running after the warranty expires.
Since like most Americans I cannot afford $45,000 cars, much less an expensive car repair,i, like most Americans would be forced to buy the American car.

You still don't get it.

The next and upcoming recession will be enhanced and expedited by any new tariffs that Trump initiates.

Lots of US goods are sold in foreign countries. From Case Caterpiller excavators to simple food items - all made in USA.

If he puts new tariffs on imported goods there will be a reciprocity from those foreign countries. In other words US goods will cost more in foreign countries and thereby less will be manufactured in the US. This will cost US plant closings and layoffs. Unemployed workers will vote Democrat in the next election cycle.

Again, Trumps banter sounds good but in reality it does not work.

The Republicans in Congress will never go for this. Because it will initiate a recession. And when that happens the Democrats come back in. The last thing that the current Republicans want.

Ain't gonna happen.

That's key point. Said. Words. Air vibrations geared towards obtaining votes and stirring markets.
There will VERY long way between "said" and "did".
Plus, "he" already started changing his "positions" on things he "said".
So the only way to actually know what will happen, is to sit tight and wait.
Besides, you have MIJ car. What to worry about? If it's a Camry, it runs practically forever anyway. Or a Corolla. Or a Civic. Or a hybrid. Just keep changing dat oil, girl.
