Bulbs, which CAN fail quickly, but are generally so cheap as to not matter. I have heard some horror stories of taking a front end off to replace a bulb, tho.

Wiper blades.

Just to give an oddity.. I had the CPAS failure (Cam/Crankshaft position actuator solenoid) fail on my truck within warranty.. They paid to replace the part, they paid for labor. They wouldn't pay for the oil change that was basically required to do after the work. Screens would separate from the solenoid and go into the oil..

GM, in their brilliance, would basically cover a replacement engine if the screen got into the engine and tore it up.. but they wouldn't cover changing the oil when replacing the part to prevent that from happening. I paid the $29 for an oil change.. Less of a headache than possibly having an engine replaced.
Car MFGs tend to use really cheap parts for the items that re not covered by warranty and better parts for the items that are. Usually not covered:

Struts/shocks; brake pads (calipers should be under warranty); batteries(have their own warranty); wiper blades; tires (have their own specific warranty); clutch plate (sometimes), oil/filter; coolant; sometimes emissions items (O2 sensors); I have also seen warranties that exclude hoses and belts, but I do no think that is common and may not happen at all anymore.

Alot of times, if you have a component like that fail.. Say you have a brake pad break apart (rare, but does happen).. Within the manufacturers warranty period, even though that part is excluded from the warranty.. A good dealership will get approval to do the work under warranty as a 'good will' gesture.

Now, that generally only applies to the original owner, so.. If you bought it used.. Less of a chance of that, but.. Always worth a shot.

I didn't understand that because once the belt stops working doesn't all that stop working too? He said this without testing anything I might add. I didn't feel comfortable about what he was saying so I decided to get a second opinion. I am taking the car to the Chrysler dealership tomorrow. Just curious as to what all can go wrong or could need to be replaced after driving a short distance (less than one mile) on a broken Serpentine belt. I am doing research now and see nothing about what he was talking about at all. I see things like cracked heads, etc. Just want to know what type of problems this type of situation can actually cause. TIA.

Sounds like he's trying to get one over on you. Let us know what the dealership says.

Apparently, it was a locked up compressor that broke the belt.

What I thought. Like I said, not uncommon. If the vehicle is still under warranty the compressor may be covered.

I had a serpentine belt break apart after melting onto the idle pulley. I replaced both the serpentine belt and the idle pulley. The tensioner remains in good working condition, but I intend to replace it soon.

It seems like way too many miles to be a manufacturer's defect, yet way to early for a properly-functioning unit to fail. Makes me wonder if something happened during an AC service along the way that might have led to the problem.

The dealer isn't even going to start working on it until tomorrow so I don't know how many days I am going to be without a car..
