I don't know about CA but in many states the mileage is only reported when the title changes hands so the same mileage year after year may indicate the same owner for that period.

Same here in WA, and probably most states. Even a smog test is only done every other year, if that's recorded. Auction cars can be rentals, but the bigger companies sell them on their own rental return lots. In most cases auctions are for those cars too unpopular, or old for the dealership taking the trade to bother marketing and take up space on the lot, but in some cases with newer cars, , they just don't want the competitor cars to compete with their new cars. It used to be that any car with over 100k miles went to auction, for the cheapo used car lots to buy. Now, with cars lasting so much longer you will still find new car dealers selling cars with 150k miles if they are in good shape. If you want to avoid rental cars, some states require "former rental" to be on the registration and title, but it may not have to be disclosed when you buy it. We ran into that here, and didn't know it was a rental until we got the registration. Typical rental cars are well maintained, and driven conservatively, but I would avoid any muscle or high performance cars that were rentals. Those are more likely to be driven hard.

That report is just a record of title activity. The mileage would only change when the vehicle changed hands.

Rental fleets are one place that auction cars come from, but I doubt that this one was a rental at probably 10 years old and over 100,000 miles. More than likely it was traded in to a dealership that doesn't keep older cars on the lot, but it's also possible that a problem was discovered that the dealership didn't want to deal with.

That report, if titles changed hands, should show when. You can do basic math and get an average of yearly mileage use. With car reports, you wont get service hitory, or un reported to insurance accident information.

If you like the car, check model and year with Car complaint , it will provide big issues with certain models.

Cars built in Japan have a certain build quality that is hard to emulate. So high milage cars, built in Japan with low complaints are the best to go after.

Lease returns go to auction. There's every and any car available on manheim, from $1k to $300k+ vehicles.
