In the infamous words of Rick Perry....Oops.

Yes, I meant to say he has not figured this out yet.

He's a business guy. He knows about increasing his casino prices, and dealing with the bottom line from increased costs. But he doesn't know much about repercussions to an economy from raising costs or prices. Lots of moving parts that bounce off each other, rippling throughout the large economy we have.

They already build plenty of cars in US (almost all X models). Not only for the US market but they also export them (from here).

The future factory in Mexico is going to be for the 3 series I believe, which are not made in US anyway.
Exactly. Why would BMW build the cars in America vs. anywhere else? We're not special. They will build it wherever they feel they can profit most.

Not just profit. To hedge risk.

I remember when the foreign currency would move against BMW. They can't just jack up the price 10% because of currency movements. Remember when Japan had the earthquake? A lot of car & parts manufacture went into a grinding halt. Being global minimized that risk

Since we are the world largest car market, under proper taxation it makes sense to build it here.

However starting with Clinton's Nafta the taxation rules are making more business sense (aka profit) to manufacture either in Mexico or Canada.
Lucky for us the next president understands what it takes to make it a fair play field for manufacturing in USA.

No, we are not, currently China is the largest car market.

Now, let me repeat, they will built wherever they want, including in Mexico.
It makes a lot of sense to them to build most of the SUVs in US, and this is currently the largest autoexport from US.

strange to me a lot of people don't get that. Even China is starting to gobble up all the BMW X5. A buddy of mine tried to buy an X5, the dealer mentioned there are people buying X5 and X6, then shipping then to Asia.

I lose faith in the German brand when they stop producing them in Germany. It loses a lot of credibility, value, and prestige when it isn't built in Germany.

I never bought a BMW before, and never had any plans to ever buy one, and still don't have any plans to ever buy one in the future. BMW's don't appeal to me. I like cars to be economical and durable. They don't have to be sporty, as long as they don't cost much and don't need much maintenance. But I want to help make America great again. So I'm not going to buy a BMW. How many other people agree with me, and are not going to buy a BMW? We can all help make America great again.

First, the U.S. isn't the largest car market. That is already China and the importance of the Chinese car market will increase even further.
Second, abolishing import duties not only makes sense for businesses, it even makes more sense for national economies.
Third, Trump is maybe a successful businessman, but I don't have the impression that he knows much about economic coherences. To seal the U.S. off from imports will make U.S. manufacturing less competitive and that will lead to higher prices. Trump doesn't seem to understand that the availability of cheap imports is the premise for million of jobs in wholesale, retail and other industries.

Sealing off the market will reduce the living standard in the U.S. Instead of reducing imports the U.S. should make manufacturing in the U.S. more competitive to increase exports. This makes much more sense, but it's a lot more complicated and requires many changes.
Protecting manufacturing in the U.S. by introducing or raising import duties will make manufacturing in the U.S. less competitive in the long-run. Many manufacturing industries in the U.S. are already extremely uncompetitive. The U.S. is in many ways a relative isolated market. Different measurements and peculiar designs are damaging import obstacles. Many domestically made products in the U.S. are extremely expensive compared to domestically made products in other developed countries. In addition to this the "buy American clause" for government contracts cost the tax payer vast sume of money. These sealing-off makes manufacturers uncompetitive and most midsize manufacturer will become unable to export to countries outside of North America.
