I have long asked myself if this is adviseable. What could happen, besides a very thorough flush and some very dirty nasty coolant coming out?

Read the directions and contents/warnings for the solution you used. They typically contain acids and other caustic chemicals, and have skin and eye warnings on them. While it may say "safe for plastics and metal" that is based on following their procedure for use, usually 15-20 minutes run time. In several months there could be some erosion of various engine and cooling system parts. Since the flush is normally mixed with water only after draining the old coolant, there may be other problems from not having the correct coolant for so long. I have seen what water alone can do to aluminum heads on a cast iron block.
