I've had my 1990 nissan maxima v6 sitting for 12 months. Went to go get it smogged and the mechanic said timing chain is off. How can I fix that on my own? Step by step or any u tube video recommendations

Did he say timing chain or timing? You have to tear apart the engine to fix a jumped chain. It's possible other damage was done from the chain doing this.

A 1990 probably has a distributor you can rotate to adjust the timing. Check out the Maxima forums for more info.

I'm assuming you mean timing because if it was a timing chain it would most likely be undrivable

1990 Maxima has a timing BELT. Not a chain.
A timing belt replacement on those Maximas is fairly easy to do... Although time-consuming.

What I'd like to know is how he came to that conclusion.

Anyway, here is a video of virtually the same engine... Keep in mind, your timing belt will be on the passenger side of the car as opposed to the front.

In some states the smog test is not required once a car is over 25 years old. Check if you really need one.

If youre going to touch the Timing Belt, take the time to also do the Water Pump while you are in the area.....unless you have already replaced it.

Agreed. It's cheap to buy, so might as well do it.
