I am a resident of Wisconsin. I will be buying a used car from a dealer in Illinois. I will be moving to New Hampshire in next 15 days and live there for more than a year (possibly 5 years). I plan to register my car in New Hampshire. Do I need to register the car either in Illinois or Wisconsin before registering in Wisconsin or can I directly register and title it in New Hampshire? If I can directly register the car in New Hampshire then what should I tell the dealers and what documents should I obtain. The car will be financed.

I bought a car from Chicago while living in Ohio. The provided IL temp tags were good for at least 30 days as I recall. Which should be enough to complete your move then register in NH. Not sure about NH but some states require you to pay sales tax on vehicle purchases made XX days before moving there. So you may have to pay WI sales tax and then use that as an exemption toward any NH tax due. But just tell the dealer the situation and they should be able to set you up.

Thanks for the information. There is no sales tax in New Hampshire so, I am wondering whether I have to pay sales tax for Wisconsin or Illinois or if I can avoid it.

If you're a resident of WI at time of purchase you likely will owe that sales tax. May be worth considering a rental for that 15 day period instead or putting a hold on it and coming back to get it or ship it.

Not enough information (again).

Do you have an address in New Hampshire? If so register car there.

If not, get any temporary tags/plates. And insurance.

If some states you owe sales tax in state purchased or state first registered.

Temporary tags can be different.

And much depends on what address you put on title when you purchase it.
