The dealer offered me $1000 on an Acura with 130k on it. No problems with the car at all. I negotiated them up to $2400. You just have to be willing to negotiate.
.
Best I can say is Most car places don't want your trade in, but they will look the other way if you are going to BUY from them at a price that is inflated to cover the trade in cost. Remember they are in the business to make money....not make a good deal for you.
Of course they rip you off, because they are counting on you NOT doing your homework .
I am floored by how your asset is debased by a dealer with lame reasonings.....yet if it sat on their lot to sell they would be saying the opposite! Perspective.....

what year and model?
My Acura Integra had similar mileage but 1994 version. If I get $1000, I'd be smiling inside.
2004 c320 4matic 200k miles trade in car gave me $200
Would you say thats fair?
Absolutely it's fair. You took the $200 so clearly it was fair. I would have most likely sold it private party or juts scrapped the thing myself. That's not the type of vehicle a dealership wants to waste time with. They can dispose of it for more than $200 but it requires some effort on their part (or your part). Apparently neither you nor the dealer really has any interest in putting the effort which is why you took $200 and why they only offered $200.
Dumb question: what was it traded in on? I mean, in the end it's the out the door cost for the new(er) car. Let's say you talked them down $10k off sticker. That might have been a screaming deal.
IIRC MB of that vintage were problematic... don't recall now. I have to wonder if you got your money's worth out of it.
I'm helping my father navigate getting another car because he got rid of his spare vehicle that was all-wheel-drive and needs something good for the snow where he lives. A local dealer offered $16K for his 2013 Toyota. Car has like 13K miles on it. I found over a dozen identical cars selling for $25K and up with double the mileage or more in his immediate area.
He bought the car new and got the 7/100 extended warranty that is transferrable via private sale. He's going to try and sell it privately at this point.
He was trying to trade it in on another lightly-used car, a 2014 Subaru that's priced at like $27k with same mileage as his car.
