LOL. the driver license is what's needed to register a vehicle. That is what the DMV required for identification. Sure, there are going to be those who tries to make fake driver license. A car dealership has no business knowing your credit info if you are not doing any financing business with them. They may ask for certified checks or cash but either one require them to know your credit history.
There have been instances where dealership are stupid enough to take non certified payment and got burned. This is why they have insurance and a salesman getting fired. As a consumer, stand up for your rights.
Verifying your identify does not involved running your credit history.
Both stores I worked at would have let you walk out as a customer. And they were well regarded franchises from well regarded dealership networks.
I don't know what they would have done if you walked in with green cash to buy a car for under $10K, but I still think they would have required it as part of their SDN/ID theft prevention policies.

A dealership requiring a customer's identification, even SS# is not the same as running a credit on a customer. Giving the dealership the SS# does not automatically gives them consent to run your credit. Just because a franchise is well regards doesn't mean they are not trying to trump consumer's rights.

It isn't as if the customer suffers any damage. Its a soft pull. They can't apply for a loan on your behalf without your express permission.

That's the whole point of this thread. Someone not using the dealership for financing is telling them they don't need to apply for credit. Dealership can ask for SS# and other forms of ID for identification purpose only.

No, your missing the point. Its like if a landlord, car rental company, or employer checks credit. The landlord, employer, etc, checks credit to make sure that you're check is likely to be good. The employer wants to make sure you aren't in a position to steal from the company, and the dealership is looking to confirm your identity beyond your drivers license, to make sure you don't seem to be the type of person that will write a bad check.
