So do people buy new cars in bland, boring colors because they like those colors, or because that's all that's available on dealers' lots?

[Note that you could replace "boring colors" with "expensive options" or "automatic transmissions" and have similar discussions about car-buying choices or lack thereof.]

I believe it's "spirited green". I bought my 2011 Mazda2 (touring version of the Mazda2 in your photo) expressly because of the color. The car itself has been the best I've ever owned, so that's a bonus. All I hear from nay-sayers is that it'll be difficult to trade, but until I actually have a problem with it, why would I want to trade it???

In the lead-up to its introduction of the car in 2010, Mazda's web site and advertising always pushed the green version forward, even though it was offered in eight or so colors. Later in its run Mazda didn't even offer the green version, so I often wondered if they pushed the green version initially, then shied away from it because it was "too" out of the mainstream. I see dozens of Mazda2s around the area where I live, but only three of us bought the green! Frankly I would buy a newer version of the same car if it was still offered, but Mazda decided not to sell it in the US any more. Toyota now has a version of the design (badged as the Yaris iA), but no distinctive colors.

Red is a great color for small cars, especially hatchbacks, and for sports cars, especially Ferraris.

It is not so great for full-size sedans, vans or trucks.
