Can tread wear really throw off alignment, assuming correct tire pressure all around?

No. That's one of those myths, being sold to make people buy an alignment when they get tires. If the tires are wearing evenly, then the alignment is fine. If they are not wearing evenly, then it will be obvious and the alignment will be needed.

Depends on the car. Even ones that would surprise you sometimes run a lot of negative camber (Mazda3). Get staggered wheels and negative camber and there's nothing you can do about uneven wear really. It's just going to happen.

We're trying to validate pikabike's statement: That if a vehicle with worn tires is aligned, then tires are replaced with new ones, will alignment be thrown off.

The only alignment I've gotten in the past 40 years is when I replaced the lower tie rods on my GMC Sierra.

I watch my tire treadwear, and do any corrections myself. Of course I have 3 full-size trucks/van so there is a lot of adjustment available, which makes it easy.

Generally speakin' the only things that cause alignment issues are smacking a curb or excessively worn components. Alignment isn't thought of as routine maintenance.

I did NOT say that worn tires CAUSE alignment to go out. I said IF you get an alignment when the old tires are worn (should have said worn UNEVENLY), then putting new tires on would be a time to get it aligned again.

Some of those lifetime alignment deals require you to take the car in at certain time lines for a check up.

Clarification: What I thought I heard you say was that having the wheels aligned with worn tires, then putting on new tires, would throw the alignment off. Correct me if I'm wrong.
