I have thought about getting one but a friend told me they're the worst gas-guzzlers out there. He said you'll get like 7 MPG. Are they all really that bad?

Of course. There's not one fuel efficient attribute to a Hummer. Fuel efficiency was dead last on it's list of design priorities.

Yeah. A friends dad bought one of the H1 military ones. Drove it for a few months sold it. It's a interesting vehicle though. I thought about getting one as a toy but my sensible side (wife) beat that out of me. Pretty gutless even with a diesel and it has a small fuel tank so it seems like it gets even worse fuel mileage than it already does.
He bought a H2 and I think he still has it. That gets crappy mileage too. I know a lot of guys are swapping to duramax diesels.

If you want one for attention yeah that will do it. It's huge and it's a pita to park due to its width. It's about 8 feet wide and has the aerodynamics of a barn.

Hey now, I drive a Barn (Sprinter Van), it's 7' wide, 9' tall and loooong, and I'm averaging 25mpg... Stop pooping on rolling barns. That Hummer II thing is an abomination that should have landed the designers on the gallows (and execs who signed off on it).

On the Factual side, it looks like H2's get about 10mpg based on real people and real driving. The H3 is little better at 15mpg, and the original/military Hummer is sitting at 8mpg.

Which Hummer, there are three. H1, primarily diesel but they did make a gas engine model for a year or two, but didn't sell many. Most uncomfortable vehicle to drive in. Even more uncomfortable than my old Rubicon. Fantastic off-road, so long as the trail was wide enough.

H2, big luxurious but mileage is terrible. Good off-road vehicle but always felt too top heavy for me.

H3, as good off-road as any Jeep I used to own, very comfortable for driving on any road from an interstate to Moab Rim in Moab UT. Mileage on the interstate was better than my last Jeep (2003 rubi). But like the Jeep, will not win any drag races. First year (2006) was under powered with the 3.5L I5, 2007 to end of production it had a 3.7L I5 that was a lot better, but still will not win a drag race. In 2008, they also offered a 5.3L, a lot more power.
The I5 engine models came with 4.56 gearing, while the V8s came with 4:10.
H3 also offered an off-road package with a 4:1 T/C .

The H1 has a naturally aspirated diesel and super heavy with fuel/power sucking transmission, AWD Tcase and planetary hubs. Its sucks for fuel mileage and I still want one. As far the other two...well double-digits is good enough for me.

The H3 is no worse than any other midsize SUV. It gets 15mpg and so does a crossover like the Explorer

They are horrible on gas mileage. I don't understand the need for one of these vehicles.
