An all time favorite movie scene:

The car that made these two, equal-length tire marks had positraction. You can't make these marks without positraction, which was not available on the '64 Buick Skylark!

That ticking noise could be something as simple as the head of a nail or screw in your tire that you have run over. This has happened to me. Check the simple things first. You could be tearing into things that dont need fixing.
