Is it not wonderful Toyota decided to unveil the new 2012 Toyota Prius on Earth Day!!! Anyway with gas prices probably going to be 5.00 a gallon by Memorial Day in some metro areas, do you think the demand for the new Prius will skyrocket...to the point I should pre-order it now. Just check it out it is an amazing upgrade and a fun vehicle to drive. Believe it or not, us environmentalist are enjoying the high gas prices.
2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid First Impressions (http://www.toyota.com/upcoming-vehicles/prius-plug-in/first-impressions.html - broken link)
I think until the enviromental disaster of disposing of these cars can be done in a safe manner, they should be banned from the market and especially if anyone in the USA gives a crap about the injury to the US economy, then they in their right mind would never consider the pos prius.
Funny thing to me how silly the buy the prius types seem to be. It's ok to buy this thing that the parts involved in making the car are so enviromentally unfriendly both in production and after the cars useable life, it legally under epa regulations could never be made in the USA or scraped in the USA, yet it's hailed as a great thing now.
Unless you have at least 8k to scrap it, why buy be silly enough to buy it?
What are you talking about 12GO, these cars will last 15 to 20 years with the batteries lasting at least 10 to 15 years. And as far as being environmentally bad to produce, this claim was debunked along time ago. To the OP, if you want it, then get it an smile as you pass those who spend $100 on every fillup in their large tanks.

I'm perfectly happy to commute in my old 30 mpg Ford Escort 5 speed, zipping past the slugs (Prius) that hold up traffic while the drivers watch their
little screens trying to match the 55mpg or whatever the sticker said they should be getting. At just under $4 gallon it's costing me $35 or so to fill up,
and saves wear and tear on my 4wd V6 Ranger so it will last longer and give me more years of fun when I'm not working.
People will continue to pay high gas prices for a real car with power, most of the Prius sold so far have been to people that use it as a status symbol. My next door neighbor, for example, has a Prius, but also has a Landcruiser.
A relative in CA has a Prius and a Pathfinder. That's not what I'd call an environmentalist.
No I do not think the demand for the Prius will go up. I think Americans have already adapted to learn how to live with $4.00 a gallon gasoline and are already anticipating $5.00 a gallon fuel. I still see as many big thirsty vehicles on the road now as I did before the prices went up. Yes for a time we relived the 70's gas crisis in the new milenium when people started ditching their gas guzzlers for more economical cars but I think we've hit another comfort zone, in knowing that high gas prices are most likely here to stay. And if that's the case, then there's no sense in not planning out whatever it is the average Joe wants to do that involves gasoline consumption, just because "what if".
Besides I don't see anything fun about a Prius. It's ugly, it's slow, it's another mass produced cookie cutter car, and the only people I ever see driving them are tree hugger nerds and maybe gays. Last but not least if you're really happy about high gas prices, there's clearly something wrong with you.

What a jumble of politcal and nationalic views in a simple thread about a car. My guess is the perosn is a union member with the usual rant.
I won't consider changing out my car due to gas prices until they hit double digits. Until then the Scooby, and the BMW I'm aiming to replace it with in a years time, will do just fine. Most people can do just as much by changing their driving style anyways.
Oh and lets remember the words of Toyotas CEO a couple of years back (when interviewed by CAR): "Hybrids won't be truly efficient until we can mate electric motors to efficient diesel engines." He went on to explain that they released the prius solely to pay for the further research to create the actual hybrid they're trying to make.
