That is basically a good idea, but if you leave enough room, sometimes an A-hole jumps in front of you from another lane.

The same thing happens on the freeways when you are trying to keep a good distance from the car in front of you.

In most intersections there is no delay between your light turning red and the other direction turning green. This is why (in the US) you get a yellow as your warning to slow down and stop.

Then there are many idiots out there as I've had people cut me off with less distance than that when I've still been in motion. TG I purchase high quality brake pads. It's gotten so bad on the primary roads that I've added Dash Cams to all my vehicles.

That largely no longer applies to many intersections all over New York City where *delayed green* lights have been employed.

Via various initiatives to either favor pedestrians, and or one direction of traffic over another traffic lights may not sync as described above.

in NYC there have been numerous initiatives. Like: Yellow is considered the same as Red & Don't block the box.

I hate that on left turns. I always thought the first person in line was counting to ten, talking to God, and getting permission from his astrologer to start through the light. Then the second person in line waits until the first car has completely cleared the intersection before he starts through. The third, fourth, fifth, sixth, etc people are hooked closer than a train when they all go through.

So in half a minute, only two cars go through the green light, and in the next half a minute, six or more cars can get through, unless, of course, the light has turned red by that time.

Why? *headdesk*

Well, the first car is making damned sure they don't get hit by someone ignoring the red light. The second, I have no idea - at that point making sure you don't block the box shouldn't be an issue.

One thing numerous people do, and thank goodness they've started cracking down on it, IS blocking the box - not following what we were taught in driver's ed about making sure you can clear the intersection before entering it and getting caught blocking cross traffic when the light changes (which means paying attention to what the traffic in front of you is doing, maybe that's the problem).

What's the matter with all you "escape" people? Godzilla is not waiting to leap out of the bushes and stomp on your car while you wait for a traffic light. Car-jackers do not prey upon cars that can't go anywhere because they are already part of a traffic back-up. Maybe once every ten years, some guy will blow a hose or something in front of you at a light. It could take you all of 10 or perhaps even 15 seconds to be able to pull around him. Meanwhile all those years of space-wasting will have delayed and inconvenienced thousands and perhaps tens of thousands of drivers behind you. Do the right thing! Close it up! If you are more than a couple of feet behind the car in front of you, you are simply doing it wrong. Repent and mend you of your evil ways!

A couple of feet? I'm hoping that you are in jest.

I like to pull up so close you can't get a piece of paper between us, and then lay on the horn just for the hell of it..when the driver in front of me starts cussing or throwing hand gestures around I just point to the car behind me and blame them..big fun for sure and breaks up the monotony of sitting in traffic..
