I offered the snow tire in lieu of awd because it is the advice I wanted to give. And because the OP didn't mention they had snow tires on their Yaris.

There is a very good chance they never even thought about it.
Yes, I am sure someone who lives in NY and has commuted for a couple of years through the winter never thought about snow tires...The OP asked for recommendations for AWD vehicles. That's all they asked for.

Thanks.

That is all the OP needs to know or consider.

But would not rule out Mazda, Mitsubishi, and Nissan.

All boils down to price, comfort, visibility, resale value and trade-in value.

SG (2004-2008) Forester XT. My commute has often been that way. Turbo will kill the reliability but keep in mind the new Tribeca Ascent is a turbo 4 cylinder. While debatable, I don't think that Subaru would ruin it's reputation for reliability by turbocharging a family vehicle.

The non turbo SG Foresters had head gasket issues....what an irony.

The best part about the Turbo FXT is that it is pretty transparent to enforcement depending on how it is set up. You could have a nice zippy vehicle without being reckless and snip some time off your commute when it isn't snowing.

The bad part is the fuel economy. You have to look closely at the final drive for each year. This can be somewhat mitigated with the correct tires and thinner driveline fluids that are not too far off of spec.

Get yourself dedicated snow tires on it. The later years have numerically lower final drive ratios for better fuel economy.

2007 Forester XT Sports model also has VTD and VDC to assist even more in inclement weather.

No more Subaru for you, I know. I don't blame you in some ways. Just thought I'd post.

As an AWD alternative, look at buying a good set of winter tires.

AWD with all-season will in general not be as capable as FWD with Michelin X-ice3, for example. Your choice.

Well, you get what you pay for with advice here. I hope the OP doesn't take my horrible, inappropriate, and generally ridiculous suggestions. Which wasn't based on any real world experience except living in the snowiest place in the country at 10,100' up a steep driveway.

Based on your real world experience what do you recommend Goldendove?

If I where commuting 100 miles a day, I would be looking at something like a Ford Fusion/Buick Regal/Dodge Charger - all come with AWD. These sedans are much more comfortable and quieter than the pretend "trucks" you are considering. Depending on the configuration, these sedans might get better gas mileage than the "trucks". Unless you have a real need for ground clearance, the sedans are a better bet for a long commute.

Goldenlove recommended a couple of AWD options like the OP asked about. Glad you know more about driving than anyone else based on where you live, even if it doesn't have anything to do with the original question being asked.

Any negatives on the Mazda?
I just leased a Mazda CX9. As you know we had the first snow of the season Saturday and I wasn't overly impressed with how it handled a tiny bit of snow. I think it's because it has 20-inch wheels and tires. I think if I put tires better suited for winter driving it would be ok. So far that's the only negative thing I have noticed performance wise. It's great crossover. So much fun to drive. Lot's of power in the turbo 4cyl and it handles great in dry and rainy weather. You will look forward to your commute every day.

My cousin has the Rav 4. Her lease is up this month and he is thinking about the Mazda or another Rav. I think it depends on who gives her the better deal. You can't go wrong with Toyota. If nothing else they are solid but boring. I had two 4runners since 2005 and they were both rock solid trouble free trucks. When the lease was up on the last one we got the Mazda. For no other reason than we wanted something different after 12 years.
