Same as the two I have in my driveway right now. Suburbans. Large enough to carry my whole family, AND pull a camper when we go. Can haul all our gear and tow the boat to the lake without taking 2 vehicles. I need something that big right now, before the kids and larger camper, I loved my 95 Nissan Pathfinder.

Ford Escape Hybrid. The really big American stuff just gets insanely bad gas mileage. I figure for the twice a year a need to tow something big, I can rent cheaper than I can put up with the gas mileage the rest of the year.

I get 22-24 MPG going down the road carrying 6 people, I get 17-18 towing my trailer with the Suburban. For a vehicle that is just under 6000# and running the 5.7 V-8, that is NOT insanely bad mileage. I tow a trailer once a week at least, every week (I also use it for work as well as pleasure). Plus haul 6 people almost every day. Let me see a hybrid that can match it for mileage and needed size. And doesn't hit you hard for the cute little hybrid label on the side. I can put a LOT of gas in a vehicle for the price difference.

Do I really have to buy American?? I love my country, but we're light years behind Toyota in pretty much every way.
They're all kind of junky, but I like the Dodge Durango, IF it has a 45RFE transmission in it. Their older style trans' aren't any better than Ford or GM. GM rear-wheel-drive's are very notorious for losing reverse.

Which means you get 10-12 mpg (at best) around town. I stand by my assessment. Also note that the original poster didn't say anything about towing or why he/she wanted an SUV.

The new tahoe hybrid! 20 mpg in town, comfortable, roomy, not a foriegn car and safe. We have a 11 yr old tahoe with 140k on it and it still runs like a top! My wife refuses to part with it and it does real well up here in the snow and ice. The only way she'd get rid of it is for a '08 new one and then it'd be a fight....
I can't stand the way the seats feel in those foriegn jobs, almost all have the "euro seats" that feel like you're sitting on the floor or on a board. The tinny door sound when you shut it also drive me up a wall.
