Toyota and other vehicle makers are actively working on vehicle to vehicle communication in the interest of crash safety. In the idea of self driving vehicles, this would be a big boon in fuel economy with a train of self driving vehicles traveling like train box cars. If vehicles actively communicate like this, wouldn’t it make vehicles more open to hacking than they already are today?
I support the idea of vehicle to vehicle communication and think it should be the first step towards autonomous driving, driving aids, and policy. For vehicles to clue other vehicles about traffic or situation anomalies can be a huge help to road safety. Think about how helpful other communicative devices have been (turn signals, brake lights, roadside chyrons, etc); the battle has been to get drivers to use them properly...cue the BMW turn signal jokes.
To prevent against hacking, perhaps it should be a unilateral communication (read-only) thus only one car could be manipulated, should something be hacked. Drivers should still be just as attentive as if they didn't have the communication system. Frankly the idea of Tesla's Autopilot system should have prioritized safety...not the idea that the driver can be selectively irresponsible and watch Harry Potter movies instead of actively paying attention to the roads. My cousin is an AI programmer and says that people give too much credit to AI. It's only as intelligent as the programmer foresees the parameters...it's not Skynet yet!
