I do it whenever in a large parking lot of nearby, less crime-free cities where there could be lurking car prowlers. It just lets them know that the car is locked. With the power lock on the tailgate of my truck I can actually hear it lock without the horn toot. I do, however, wait until there is no one standing nearby. Though it seems like it would be fun to watch them jump, it is rude.

For me, the first time I press the button, the doors lock, but alarm is not set. No horn beep
Second time I press the button, the alarm sets, and the horn beeps.
Third time I press the button, the horn beeps again, and that's how I know I really did set the alarm. If I don't have my hearing aids in, I may go for a third beep of the horn just in case.

I generally do this as I'm walking away from the car.

Sorry, ma'am, if I got you panties in knot.

You don't like the sound, but it is not hurting (damaging) your hearing. Relax, it's not that bad.

I usually use the little button on the exterior door handle of my F-150, but If I'm in a less than desirable area, I will lock the doors with the fob until I hear the horn sound. Not trying to be rude, just making sure my alarm is set for sure.

WOW I did not know this was such a huge issue. Yeesh! 1st - I never thought to disable the sound. When I get out of my car and click my my remote, it beeps on the first click. 2nd - I do this because I tend to have a million things on my mind. It's like a security measure to make sure the car is locked. I know the car locks after so many minutes, but still. Almost like me needing to make sure the stove and any irons are off before leaving my house, even if I remember turning them off or unplugging them. I may have a touch of OCD. Anyway its done as confirmation the car is lock so I can move on to something else and not think about that anymore. It's not done to irritate anyone at all. It's done so I can have peace of mind.

I turn on the remote start if I see people lurking by my car. Or once, leaning on my car. Freaks them out!

When anyone does this I imagine that movie scene from "Casino" where DeNiro's car then........implodes.
That sound range is right where my hearing is the most sensitive.

(Like cell phones, you don't need an EMPIRICAL study to see who does it the most)

I was actually unaware that you can turn the option off, as the poster a few spots above explained. Wish more people turned them off.
On my old car that locked the doors. Second tap turned the alarm on and beeped. On my new car it's keyless entry. Just use my thumb on the door sensor as I'm getting out and it locks the doors and sets the alarm. There's a soft audible alert.

It takes a bit for the sensor on the door to lock/alarm and it doesn't always pick it up if you're going quickly. Sometimes I'm already a couple feet away waiting to hear the lock/chime. When it doesn't happen rather than walk back I just use the fob. I double tap because that's how my old car was. First tap locked the doors, second set the alarm. I might be 30 feet away by the time I get to the remote in my pocket depending if I'm juggling my briefcase and a coffee cup.

I wouldn't turn it off even it was an option. When I forget where I parked among the ocean of SUVs it's a nice audible beacon rather than hitting the panic button.
