It really doesn't matter what area you live in, crime can happen ANYWHERE. Agreeing with everyone else, invest in a locking gas cap. With gas prices soaring, this type of crime will only get worse.
There's an old story from the 70's about a guy who tryed to orally siphon gas from a motor home...and got the wrong container. He ended up siphoning from the sewage holding tank. The owner came outside just in time to find the guy wretching and decided that was punishment enough...
Fill your car full of gas again except this time camp outside in the bushes with an airhorn. When the gas bandit arrives give a good blast of the airhorn mid-siphon. If they're doing it the traditional way then with luck they'll jump and swallow a lung full of gas. Then all that's left to do is point and laugh.
KSTP TV (Minneapolis) had on the news about a guy the cops caught in Minneapolis that had a unique gas siphoner. (they didn't give many detais except it was mounted under the front sear of his pick up ).
The policeman said it could pump 5 gallons per minute.
Never buy more than 1 gal at a time and minimize loss. In addition to that I would suggest gift wrapping your garbage and leaving it in your back seat with doors unlocked. Let them steal that too.
The ones that can lock from the inside can be easily forced open with a screwdriver
