Not for Indy, 55mph on the 465 beltway is adequate as the road is at over capacity and filled with potholes the size of craters.

If you are not going at least 80-90mph on I 85/40 in the left lane then you really need to stay to the right slow lane.... I travel that along with the NJTP often and the trucks in the left lane plus the "Yeah I said it..."jerks" in the left lanes... You will get pulled over because you actually are one of the Azzholes that cause the backups/accidents.

Oh great, another speeder vs. speed limit debate has commenced.

Of course they do, they just choose to ignore it.

I say "Fawk 'em", don't buy into the big rush silliness and never drive more than 5 mph over speed limit.

If enough people do the same, who knows it might start a trend!

Virginia Code 46.2-862: A person shall be guilty of reckless driving who drives a motor vehicle on the highways in the Commonwealth (i) at a speed of twenty miles per hour or more in excess of the applicable maximum speed limit or (ii) in excess of eighty miles per hour regardless of the applicable maximum speed limit.

There have been many attempts by the VA Senate to change this law, but it still exists.

So true.

On the VA board there is a an "Official Reckless Driving Thread" (along with other individual threads) that is updated fairly frequently with those who have been charged with reckless (20 over or 80+). It is currently 222 pages long. Oh, and don't forget to put away those radar detectors!

But is speeding really worth the savings in time?

Lifehacker did a story on this. In one example, on a 50 mile trip at 10 MPH, they saved 6 minutes.

Quote:
To put all these savings of a few minutes into perspective, let's assume the average speeding ticket cost is $150. In order for six minutes of your time to be worth $150, you would have to make $1,500/hour or about $3,000,000 per year.

I use Waze on all my trips. When I set it it says I'll be there at a certain time. Seems like if I drive the speed limit or decide to drive faster, I don't save much, maybe a minute or two. Used more gas if I drive faster.

Although typically I do bump up at least 5-10 MPH most times on the highway.

Interstate drivers routinely drive 70 80 mph's where the speed limit causes for 55...and if your going 55, they actually zoom past you upset because your not going 80.

Do you think that most drivers know what SPEED LIMIT means?
Here is the deal. I got nailed when I was in my twenties doing 60 in a 30 zone at 1 AM.
They sent me to a mandatory class. The lesson sunk in.

In an emergency speed deprives you of time. The slower that you are going, the more time you will have to react to a situation.

Two of three of Newton's laws of motion. I'm sure that they are public domain by now.
"Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it."

means: wear your seat belt.

The relationship between an object's mass m, its acceleration a, and the applied force F is F = ma. Acceleration and force are vectors (as indicated by their symbols being displayed in slant bold font); in this law the direction of the force vector is the same as the direction of the acceleration vector.

means: the faster that you are going at impact the bigger the mess.

Why not just raise the speed limit? Then there is no "speeding".

Well.. is every vehicle you see being driven by a competent and alert driver? Are all those vehicles in good repair, and capable at those increased speeds? At what point do you cut off drivers as their reaction times slow down significantly?

Speed limits cater to the Majority, a speed at which the most people in the most vehicles ought to make it through their trip in relative safety, even assuming in car distractions, bald tires, worn brakes and elderly with slow reactions (along with the thousand Other potential issues).

This has always been, and will always be, a self entitlement issue. All about the one person who says "that doesn't apply to ME" as they completely fail to think of any/everyone else on the roads. Eventually, it WILL apply to them, and then they will get testy and grumble about the law breakers.
