Cars such as the Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta and Chevy Impala. When can you get the best deals on these cars? When they are still in production or after production has ended?

I have never seen discontinued cars filling up dealer lots waiting to be sold. The day after they stop making them they all disappear. How many Saturns did you see waiting to be sold off?

Go buy a Ford Taurus. You can get a damn good deal because nobody wants them even when new.

People tend to panic when a car or marque is first discontinued. " I will not be able to get parts and service." The prices drop considerably for a year or so, then people realize the catastrophe failed to occur and the prices rebound some. Some desirable cars go up in value when discontinued (Pontiac G8 GXP for example).

Ford tends to follow some unofficial guideline that they discontinue parts for a model 10 years after the model is discontinued. Maybe not EVERY part, but a decent amount of them tend to drop after that 10 year mark if they aren't also used in other vehicles.

Of course, there is always the aftermarket as a source of parts. You can go on Rockauto.com and probably find 3-4 different manufacturers making an O2 sensor for your 20 year old Pontiac.

I've had a few older model cars. I've never really had an issue finding parts for them. I might not be able to get OEM parts, but I still got quality replacements.

Well, I'm still waiting for the right time to buy my first Studebaker. But there are so many choices! One of the Loewy coupes, or a bullet-nose? How about a Silver or Golden Hawk? or, maybe an Avanti.

Decisions, decisions.

I've been told there are good deals on the Focus and Fiesta NOW. I would totally avoid either one though unless you are planning on going with the manual trans...significant problems with their automatics. Really a shame too because the Focus (haven't driven a Festiva) in the slightly more performance oriented trims is a pretty fun to drive car. Definately one of the more enjoyable rentals I've had by a long shot.

The ST and RS (the performance trim levels) were only offered with a manual transmission so you would not have to worry about the automatic transmission issues
