Interesting

I knew this forawhile, but what gives?

Is the company too conservative-minded (apparently Advance Auto is way more conservative in terms of company rankings than most people realize)

Or does CA not have enough space for a store???

Exactly - they already have a known brand operating in the state and there is no need to introduce a competing brand.

Just as there are no Checker Auto Parts there... they're all Kragen. (There's a third identical brand in that chain as well.)

When small and regional chains merge or buy out, it's a marketing tossup as to whether to rebrand the acquired stores or leave them under a known and existing name. In these cases, the stores in each chain have nearly identical logos and looks, just different names.

probably stores are reluctant to operate in CA due to their restrictive hazardous waste rules where pretty much everything is treated as hazardous waste with increased regulation and associated fines.

Yes, it's very difficult. You have to have to drive to Nevada for parts.
