Buyer wants to ship car via “Sherpa Auto Transport”...I cant find much on this company, however he said he wil wire funds to my account. Looks like a new company...
As long as funds are wired and I don’t release the car until it’s cleared, do I need to be concerned?
While wire transfers are generally pretty safe, your biggest concerns are that:
1 - If the person who wired the funds claims fraud and the bank agrees (for example, if the buyer wired the money from an account that was not his), then they can take the money back from you.
2 - You have to give them some banking details to receive the wire, so they can use your bank details to either try to steal from it, or more likely steal your identity.
I don't mean to scare you from a wire transfer, it is a good method, but not flawless.
Sherpa Auto Transport from q quick Google search appears legitimate. They have an A- rating from the BBB.
I think you should explore the rest of the deal. What is the buyers history on the forum that he is buying it from? If he(she) is a long time member with lots of posts about that type of car, that gives me a good feeling it is legit. If he recently joined of doesn't have any posts, that raises a flag for me.
Did the buyer see the car? Or send someone to look it over?
Will then send you a copy of their driver's license?
Those are the next steps if I'm worried about payment matters.
I've posted cars on the internet before. It's not at all uncommon to get something like, "Hi, I've just been deployed but really want to buy your MERCEDES 300D. I can set up a secure wire transfer and have the car picked up. Please respond with your details."
Hopefully you've at least verified this is a real person. This sort of scam is REALLY common.
Because scammers send and receive money WIRED. Duh, they're scammers, why the hell would they meet you in person?
It even warns you right there on craigslist. NEVER wire (or receive) money to a person you don't know or never met.
I don't give a crap if they have facebook, instgram, W2, paystub, and skype you every night. DO NOT accept wired transactions from people you don't know or never met.
They're going to "send" you the money, take it back, and you're car is going to be long gone via "sherpa auto transport" which is keyword for Uncle Ray's chop shop.
