For some reason have got this old Mazda television commercial ditty on loop in my head.

"Piston engine goes "boing, boing, boing", but a Mazda goes "Hmmmm".

Of course asking Dad difference between a piston engine and what Mazda was offering began a rant about *ahem* *&@(* import cars, so just let it go.....

I remember Mazda had a huge recall in the early 1970s due to many issues with their rotary engines.

yes i remember those commercials. i still would not mind owning an RX3 or RX4. the problems with the early rotary engines though were more perceived than real. they did have problems with the tip seals, usually not enough oil getting to them, but a lot of owners reported oil consumption problems compared to the piston engines they were used to. mazda had a system that lubricated the rotor tip seals, and when in good condition the system worked nicely. lack of maintenance though would burn up the seals.

if i were to own a rotary engine car today, especially one from the 70s, i would head over to racing beat, and pick up one of their upgraded engines to use.

Yep, remember them well.

The rotary engine: difference for difference's sake.

I remember it well. It was patterned after a song called "Old Betsy Goes Boing Boing Boing" by The Hummers. I have the 45 of that record, too.

The summer I graduated from high school, 1971 I got a job selling Fuller Brush products door to door. I went up to a house that had a brand new rotary engine Mazda parked in the driveway. I chatted with the owner about his very fine car and he asked me if I wanted to drive it ! As any red blooded 18 year old would say, I said yes, and he let me drive it alone! I was very impressed by it's smoothness and power. It certainly could have kicked my 1968 Dodge Dart's butt! I really liked that car and I will never forget that man's kindness and trust, and especially that car.

Wow, they stick to it a long time. Sometimes you're late, sometimes you're early and sometimes you just aren't.
