Yes, the ones that met a 300-page spec driven by federal law and military regulation.
It's just a sales scam. One of many. We so badly need regulation of the industry to bring it out of this back-alley drug-deal (with mugging) model.
Do we need more or less regulation? I'm thinking part of the problem is in my state, all new vehicle sales are REQUIRED to take place via an authorized dealership. We cannot order direct from the factory like Tesla offers its customers in other states.
On a different yet related thread, a semi-educated blowhard piped up and said "well I can't think of a dealer that would bat an eye if you walked in and just offered them full price!" in response to my anti-dealership sentiment.
The length of the sales process, the upsells (regardless of whether or not rebates and incentives are part of the deal) and incessantly hawking warranties and slapping on dealer value-adds before vehicles are even listed for sale... I could do without ANY of that mess.
For military procurement? I'd argue against less, although there should be an expedient bypass channel for some things. I doubt anyone wants to get into combat with something that doesn't have a certified chain of compliance and performance.

Oh, regarding the military $500 hammer thing...
Not sure on that one - remember when the Mil STD 810 was all the rage with mobile phones? Drop, dust, and water resistant (IP67). Most certified models were flip phones, I recall seeing one or two smartphones with this cert. The Nokia 3310 was a simple candy bar form factor, never certified, but would pass such rigors nonetheless. Makes me wonder if all this certification is worth the expenditure, or Uncle Sam is trying to grease as many palms as he can on his trip to the hardware store...
LOL, 3k, maybe if it is a bazillion-dollar vehicle................otherwise, I would pass.
