The key tag labelled it as an "suv", but wikipedia calls it a crossover. I wouldn't label it either as an MPV(Honda Element, Scion XB, Nissan Cube), too curvy.
The first generation could definitely pass for a hatchback, but where would the 2nd generation go more for?
That being said, I would rather label it more as an "mini MPV" than an SUV.

What difference does a label make? People are very comfortable using "SUV" to describe a plethora of vehicles that offer neither "sport" nor "utility", so why are we picking on the Soul?

Generally the term SUV refers to body on frame vehicles like the 4Runner, Xterra, and Wrangler, while CUV refers to unibody vehicles like the Rogue or RAV4.
