The key tag labelled it as an "suv", but wikipedia calls it a crossover. I wouldn't label it either as an MPV(Honda Element, Scion XB, Nissan Cube), too curvy.

The first generation could definitely pass for a hatchback, but where would the 2nd generation go more for?

That being said, I would rather label it more as an "mini MPV" than an SUV.

Is there a "butt-fugly Matchbox macro-scale weird-for-the-sake-of-weird" category? That.

I would label it as a subcompact hatchback.

I always see car reviewers refer to them as crossovers.

I wonder now what kind of angle the 3rd generation is going to pull as the 3rd generation is coming into debut this October. The 2nd generation definitely improved the sizing aspect.

Whatever buyers want it to be.

What difference does a label make? People are very comfortable using "SUV" to describe a plethora of vehicles that offer neither "sport" nor "utility", so why are we picking on the Soul?

Generally the term SUV refers to body on frame vehicles like the 4Runner, Xterra, and Wrangler, while CUV refers to unibody vehicles like the Rogue or RAV4.

The Soul is more like a crossover (CUV) than an SUV
