here is my experience:
anything NEW will work for about 18 months.
expensive/cheap/whatever. no problems.
after 2 years, i cannot depend on any.

so...my solution is to buy new ones, never charged once,
super-duper cheap whether on sale, on clearance, Craig's List, etc.
then...after 24 months of no use, buy another and sell the old on CL.

if i actually do use it at least once, i might keep it longer than 18 months,
depending on performance, but nothing exceeds the 2 year limitation.
the $ work like this: buy new $55. sell old for $20. so far, so good.
I've been told you can but a AGM battery and do the same... except that you only have cycle the battery half (or even third) as much and use jumper cables. I haven't tried it myself. However my early model Mazda Miata has one that seems to last longer on the shelf.

The only thing that “breaks” is the battery and the inline fuse. Which are easily replaceable. I’ve had mine for 7 years. Works great. The bes5 thing is to keep it charged and replace the $15 battery every 3/4 years

I have this one. Jumped at least two cars with it. The toolbox size ones are a waste.
