"We don’t believe in CVTs or downsizing, says Mazda"

"A Mazda powertrain engineer says that the Japanese automaker doesn’t “believe in” using continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) or downsized turbocharged petrol engines."

Other automakers have entire fleet on CVT while others have a mixed bag of CVT and regular automatic transmissions.

Interesting to note that the current Toyota RAV4 - still has a regular automatic transmission.

So what they're really saying is they don't want to use a JATCO/Nissan CVT and are too small to design their own.

And their engines are small (2L is rather small, right? For SUV) turbo charged engines.

I’m sure they could use an Aisin CVT if they wanted to, but why would they?

They don't see that many car either, look at the top selling vehicles most of them have CVTs maybe Mazda could learn a thing or two. Mazda is rather small so as another poster alluded to they probably don't have the funds to produce their own. Their 6 speed tranny winch was great was great when initially produced is losing out to Honda's CVT civic, and Accord.

Mazda and Toyota are joining together to build a factory here in Alabama. Like I said, I’m sure they could easily use an Aisin CVT from Toyota, but Mazda buyers typically value handling and sportiness. There is nothing sporty about a CVT.

Don't know if anybody noticed, but Toyota doesn't use CVTs in the Camry or Rav4...I like Mazda's philosophy. German cars don't use them either.

There is a reason for this, they seem to be a solution in need of a problem.

CVTs and to a lesser extent DCTs create as many problems as they solve.

For starters, if your customers don't like them, and your competitor DOES offer a full line of standard 6As or 8As, well, folks will go looking.

Hyundai/KIA are very slow to step into CVTs. I believe only the 2019 Forte will be CVT, engineered and built in-house like all their trannies. Also, they dropped the turbocharged engine in the Santa Fe (IIRC) and returned to larger, naturally aspirated engines.

Turbos and CVTs are not the cure-all that some think them to be. Especially as miles pile on.

CVT's are expensive to fix, just like Hybrids.
there is not a lot a competition in our area,
so there is not much of a choice. we figured in maintenance
on our most recent decision to buy and CVT did not make the cut.
