To clarify, as a consumer, when I am presented with the final bill for the transaction, I don't care what they call each line item as long as the bottom-line price is what was agreed to. Right. But that makes you a consumer only in the most passive sense (that we all "consume") and is more about saving small amounts (the sales tax on a couple of hundred - $15?) no matter what the other cost or consequences. Thus, I think there are other terms that are more specific and meaningful.

Consumer =/= someone who gets the lowest price on everything.

I was looking on Carvana and they advertise no dealer or doc fees. But their prices seem to be higher than most so I’m sure that stuff is factored in.

They are just add on fees to pad their profit. In Alabama, the only fee the dealer has to pay out of pocket when they sell you a car is the title application fee which is only $15. Everything above that $15 on a "doc fee" is just extra profit they are padding the sell with. I don't pay doc fees and will walk out if necessary but most people just sign the contract and move on. That is why dealers put those fees in there....they get away with it without being questioned most of the time. The way to handle it is negotiate the price of the car and do not mention or ask about if they charge a "doc fee." Then when you settle on a price and go to do the paperwork, you are going to see where they added the doc fee on in the contract and it will be on top of the price you negotiated. Point it out and question them and just point blank say we agreed on X amount not X amount plus some frivolous fees. They will often come back with a reply along the lines of it is a required fee that they must charge all customers...blah, blah, blah. Which is an outright lie. It is just a fee they try to charge all customers to make more money. Get up and walk if necessary and they will either stop you or wait to see if you really leave and then call you an hour or two later when they realize you were serious and are not coming back.
