Back in the 80s hatchbacks and station wagons had fold flat rear seats. Pull a lever, pull the seat back down, and it folded flat. Many of today’s hatchbacks and wagons require extra steps like lifting the rear seat bottom to fold forward and or removing the rear headrests. Why does today’s vehicles require these extra steps when they weren’t required in the 80s & 90s?

This allows for more space.

Which cars require removing the headrest?

In the case of the Honda Fit it's a combination of crash safety and increasing space. The seat bottoms actually drop down lower than they were when you fold the seat backs flat, but you have to disconnect them from the floor first.

Vauxhall Agila seats fold flat at the touch of a button, mine are folded down permanently as I carry more stuff than people.

Removing the headrests is required today because back in the 80's and 90's, they weren't required on rear seats.

This. But some fold.

The middle two seats in an Odyssey will fold down only if they're in the rear half of seat travel - any closer and the headrests will hit the front seats. The rear seat will only fold with the headrests removed.

OTOH, the middle seats on an XC90 will fold to a flat load floor with the headrests folded, and the rear jump seats fold flatter because the seat cushion slides back to allow more room for the bolstered seatbacks.

That's very interesting.

In the C-max the seat moves forward a bit to allow the seat back to fold flat. It might be worth looking to see if other fords have this feature.

A couple other vehicles that fold flat are the Rav 4 and the outlander. Prii fold fairly flat and I seem to recall this in a rental corolla as well.

My 2017 Ford Explorer came with 3 rows of seating which I had no need for. I wanted space for my golf equipment so the 3rd row has been folded down since I got the car and my golf equipment is in the back. I am not even sure how to unfold it
