True. A Henry J (or the Sears Roebuck model, the Allstate. Yes, you could buy a car from Sears!) could not be built and sold today. Nor could the King Midget (imagine a King Midget with a B&S 25 horse V-twin engine!).
Government regulations just would not allow them to be built!

Actually, you CAN buy a very simple vehicle, IF your state will allow you to make it street legal. Check out the UTV known as the Mahindra Roxor. The basic vehicle will cost about $15K. But, by the time you add the options required for comfort and to make it street legal (top, doors, turn signals, windshield, heater, windshield wipers, radio, etc.) it will be about $26K. It has a diesel engine and manual transmission, and it looks a lot like a Jeep CJ7.

How does that explain the fact that Indians don't even want a Nano??
There are no libs, epa, global warming fanatics or anything else stopping it from being a raging success.

Here is the basic transportation you are talking about, and one driven off the lot with side panels for winter is about $10,000 and has seating for 4. In our area, you see several elderly people have one and use it every day to go shopping, to the Senior Center, etc. just as they would use a standard car.

Permanent license required to drive them on public roads.

Sounds like all the cars I owned back in the 80s.

I'd buy one.

If you want a project like that, build a dune buggy and make it street legal. Tube frame, you can put on any body you want.

These are enthusiast vehicles and are not value-priced, as they use premium parts (crate engines, off-road tires) that are specialized for their purpose, or I should say, capabilities.

The problem lies in that the non-enthusiast crowd would not appreciate or buy many of these value-builds at all. Why? Single people are dating and want to impress, married men would never convince their wife to drive a car that cost $1000/10000 new. They'd sooner drive a 10 year old Tahoe or Land Rover than a brand new econo-box. Especially those with 2 children that seem to be convinced they need a three-row, 7-seater.

Peer pressure and worrying what your neighbors and coworkers drive will stop cars like these from taking off. Just the way it is. I wouldn't invest in a value build operation, it's essentially the bottom of the market. Maybe in Russia or India or Eastern Europe, but not the US.

he's saying that the Nano, a very basic, cheap car, sold in a country without the libs, or EPA or any other governmental forces, still was having a hard time selling because, even without those forces YOU say are causing the problem, people don't WANT it.

And sorry, but safety and emissions cleanliness are GOOD things. Unless you LIKED breathing in LA in the late '60s/early '70s with smog days where you had to stay inside...

just a basic motor that comes in 3 , 4 or 8 cylinders, manual tranny, drive shaft and 4 wheels. a car that anyone with a $50 ratchet set can work on and fix the majority of problems that may come up(no specialized parts). that could be sold for under 2K new.

I have a young cousin in college who did a report on the average cost to build a car factoring in money spent on R&D, labor and materials, the cost of each part. if you strip away all the bells and whistles with todays modern production technology a Functional car or truck could be built for under 1K.

They already have these. They are branded under the Ford label.

A lot of cars already fit that market. Get a honda or toyota that's 25+ years old and you have your mass produced simple basic car
