That's exactly what I am hoping it looks like, except with 4WD or AWD at least. Also dying to see what the Hyundai Santa Cruz ends up being.
I drive a Subaru Baja currently. As close to that as possible is exactly what I am praying for! Bonus if I can get one of them in manual.

It may sadly be the closest they will get, close enough to get some of the old ranger fans, if it sells enough 4x4 and AWD would be around the corner, they just have to market it right.
instead of commercials with big burly guys throwing dusty cement bags in the bed, they can show 20somethings delivering amazon packages, and helping their friends move.
or share commercials with their F150's showing what each does best like they used to.
only this time showing the F150 in rugged rural environments, and the new rangers in urban big city downtown environments(where F150's have a hard time even parking).
No pansie 20 something here. Just a 40 year old who is smart enough to know what works best for him without injecting ego into it.
1. I can only afford one vehicle.
2. Most of my driving annually is back and forth to work in NYC
3. Parking is frequently an issue
4. I have kids and need seats for them.
5. My only towing EVER is one jetski, 8-10 days of the year.
6. I hunt. That’s the ONLY reason I want a bed. I hunt from late-Sept to Dec. That’s only 3 months.
I tried the pickup thing twice: a 2001 Frontier and a 2016 Ram. The Frontier was pretty good for me but a semi rearended me in it. The Ram was a disaster for my lifestyle. Didn’t even make it to hunting season. My father took it thankfully.
Actually the Ranger was selling just fine (tooling had been paid of years ago and was mostly pure profit). It wasn't meeting modern emissions and safety regs without a lot of work. Which is why it took so long to get the NEW Ranger developed. And now there will be a smaller truck (Courier) to go along with it here in the US.

Emissions were/are up to date. Same with airbags. Could have added more as time went by.
The buying public is fickle.
Some want a fancy looking truck with all of the bells and whistles. Some want a "modern" looking vehicle. Just look at all of the crappy looking sedans today. Obscene to some but "in" to others.
Then there is marketing. If the manufacturer doesn't market the vehicle - it can whither on the vine.
Then the "bean counters" come along and require the stock price to rise - by whatever means.
Then the most important aspect - the CEO of the manufacturer. One may want a small truck while the next CEO sees no need for one. Management at it's best and management at it's worst. The decision makers.
Automakers hire companies to see what type of vehicles the public like and don’t like and if they would buy a small pickup the CEOs don’t just say yes or no. They go by what the research company and focus groups have to say. And if their research and public opinion say they want a certain vehicle then they will look into making one. It’s not rocket science people the automakers knows what vehicles they make are selling and small pickups were not selling. Ford probably had a 180 day supply of Rangers on hand just sitting in parking lots around their assembly plants. Can’t make money on vehicles sitting and hoping a dealer will order them. They were not selling Gm same problem with the S10. Automakers are in business to make money if the Ranger and S10 were making money they would still be made today. In order to make a vehicle it’s got to be something that will sell in large numbers like the new Ford Ranger public demand is strong for it that’s why they are adding shifts to the Ranger assembly plants to meet the demand.
