This is interesting, it serves no benefit to get one in real world driving, it is actually worse.

No doubt in my mind this would happen. It was a stupid idea by GM and a waste of resources. They would do better by improving the V6...

Pretty standard expectation for GM to be on the TAIL end of engine offerings.

Toroflow diesel (1960's),

The Cars That Killed GM: The Oldsmobile Diesel - Autosavant | Autosavant

But... alas... my 'successful' Med Duty truck sported a 4cyl (real) GM Diesel (Studebaker! E-40 - 1961 - 1963)

Can’t wait for someone to put a Flowmaster catback on that baby. Should sound great.

Chances are good that in some (maybe many?) conditions the 4 cylinder does actually deliver better economy. Optimal engine size has a lot to do with how you use it, because different sized engines have different amounts of power they produce most efficiently. A V6 may be more efficient for towing, whereas a 4 cylinder might be more efficient with an empty bed.

I want to say I remember someone... maybe it was Top Gear? Anyway someone had a supercar follow a Prius around a track, and the Prius was basically at redline the entire time. The supercar actually delivered better economy because the power needs being asked for were closer to the sweet spot if the bigger engine.

However it likely has less emissions and a lower displacement allow lower tax rates in some countries so it may not get more MPG but still is better although most Americans would get the V8 as it has same MPG and more HP and Americans care more about MPG then emissions and there is no displacement tax in the US

M3.

Problem with boosted engines is they run rich when boosting. Then you get modern turbochargers that you basically sneeze at and they're generating boost. If it's actually boosting going down the freeway at 75 mph, it's just dumb design. Get an electronic wastegate and open it up so it doesn't. There's no reason a 2.7 is going to have any trouble cruising around at 75

That's great, if they could keep them running.

Just google "Ram Ecodiesel failure", way too many low mileage engine failures out there for me.

Boosted engines don't necessarily have to run rich - for instance if your have a lot of intercooling, heavy use of EGR, and especially direct injection, you can probably run around stoich in all but maybe full load.
