Fo r me the best cars were 1966-72 for both looks and performance. The later 70s and the 80s were pretty much ugly dogs, and there hasn't been much else since that can begin to compare except for the

The mid 00s to early/mid 2010s Audis looked better imo. Ditto for the Jetta Mk6 vs the current one.
Alfa Romeo 159 and MiTo are still beauties, the Grande Punto with its Maserati front, Golf Mk5 and 6 looked better than the mk4 & 7 imo. Peugeots were weird but unique. The 308 is now too bland. The facelift of the 208 made it too fussy. The current Citroen C1 & C3 are uglier than their predecessors. The C3 Picasso was cool for a van. I think that the first decent looking cars of the 2000s arrived circa 2003 - the quirky Megane II, the first gen Mazda3, the Citroen C3. But by 2007-8 even Hyundai and Kia were releasing beautiful cars. the ToyoBaru GT86 was launched at that time frame. I also think the newest Ford Fiesta looks duller. The second gen Hyundai i30 looked better imo than the current one. The new Elantra also lost the edginess of its predecessor. I will never buy a car made in the years 2015-2019, except if it's a model that was launched in before the second half of 2014 (the tiny Peugeot 208 or Dacia Duster or Sandero for example, we have small roads here). And yeah 2008-2014 was a completely different era, no terrorism in Europe, a Democrat for a POTUS, Disney channel was still watchable and the best era of pop music since 1990.
There were terrorist incidents in Europe during 08-14. I remember back in 11 a bomb explosion happened in Moscow international airport and 14 was the year isis was established

I miss my '09 Volvo C30. A lot! Awesome car. Woman having a medical episode left the road and wiped it out in the driveway. She ultimately was ok wealth wise but her Mercury Grand Marquis did a number on that Volvo.

No, they are either getting blander (Ford, Peugeot), uglier (Citroen, Toyota, Renault) or like Dart Vader's helmet mobile rejects (Honda). Audis got new bulbous noses that look meh.
I noticed that cars in the late nineties to 2000s tend to be built the best. It seems golden age of vehicle engineering and durability. Lasting the longest while looking like new and with least issues. The average age of vehicles seem to have peaked for cars of that era.
In the 2010s manufactures are turning them into rolling smart devices that have many teething problems and rapid obsoleteness and are not user serviceable. Once the firmware is no longer updated the vehicle is history. Though I guess manufactures have to do this planned shelf life strategy as they would need to keep up with user and technological demands in the age of smart phones and to stay in business so they can sell new cars and not turn belly up.
I have a 2008 Audi S4 Avant. I really like the haulin-ass utilitarian nature. Audi doesn’t change their design very much so that’s not the issue. The issue is trying to find another high performance sport wagon in the US. Despite some recent news that they’re coming back, right now it’s Europe that gets all the good stuff.
