Often the fine print will state competitive lease in family. I've assumed that to mean if I currently have a Buick - competitors are any brand such as Ford, Honda ect… outside of the GM family whereas a Chevrolet would not be considered as such as it is a GM car. Is my assumption correct? Thanks in advance!

Its either usually listed in the ad or the easiest way would be to call up the dealer and ask.

Correct, GM does not consider other GM brands as competitors.

GM does often offer a loyalty rebate for either owning or leasing another GM car/truck.

A competitor is another auto brand like GM competition is Ford,FCA , Toyota etc etc same with any other brand. Not a brand within a brand like Toyota and Lexus same company
