I still have many cars with hood ornaments.... Mercedes mostly but also Lincoln, Cadillac, Buick and the old Flying lady herself who has been a bit sick lately and has been in “hospital” getting a new convertible top.

With giant cars that had a giant hood, the hood ornament helps you aim the car so you can keep the beast between the lines. You have little room for error with a car so big and you cannot see anything immediately in front of you. You learned to line the hood ornament up with a point on the right lane marker ahead of you and then you do it automatically without thinking about it. I remember thinking when I first drove a car without one, "How do I aim this thing?" You learned nut it was harder (not really it was just different and seemed harder if you were 16 and had less than 100 hours of driving under your belt).

I had Buick century with one, it was mid/late 80's. My cousin would always turn the damn thing sideways if he was around the car. 95ish Buick regal I owned had a badge.
