My 1941 Plymouth Special Deluxe, 1957 Buick Century, and 1982 Lincoln Towncar all had hood ornaments.

No, I'm not quite that old I guess. My first was a 1958 Chrysler with only the letters (C H R Y S L E R) on the hood. It, and pretty much all since had the logo/ornament on the grill, not the hood.

My Cadillac has a crest on the hood, it is spring loaded in case someone tries to twist it off or a car wash bends it down. Some cars still have them.

Chrysler had the pentastar hood ornament on their vehicles. I like the MAC Truck Bull Dog.

I've had several older Mercedes, all of which came equipped with the classic three-pointed star hood ornament.

The four cars that I remember that had some sort of hood ornament are:

1. 1924 Dodge Brothers - It's actually a MotoMeter radiator cap with temp tube and Star of David emblem.
2. 1953 Chevy
3. 1956 Ford Fairlane
4. 1994 Jaguar XJ6

Rigidly attached ones were prohibited under the 1968 federal safety rules. They were deemed a hazard to pedestrians. Later flexibly mounted ones were allowed.

Many 70s and 80s Jaguars had the leaping cat from the 1967 420 by their owners. It entailed drilling 2 holes in the hood.

Haha...man this brings back memories. My dad purchased a 1968 Mercedes 220 from the factory in Germany. It sure did have a hood ornament which got stolen so frequently, my pops had to buy a big box of replacements.
