I think nearly all cars had them up to the mid 50s, including my '55 Plymouth. The last one i had was the enduring classic on a 58 Jaguar. Unless you count the front trunk handle on the '62 VW beetle. I never had a Mercedes

Yeah - my 1990s Mercedes, my current Bentley, and the Rolls Royce. Dad drove an early 1990's Cadillac with a hood ornament. One of my employees has a new Hyundai Equus with one as well.

My current Mercedes (2014) still has one, but it's an option now to either have the star upright or just a little small button.

49 DeSoto, 51 Buick,

Some had "fins" on each front fender
58 Plymouth
61 Ford Wagon
66 Dodge Dart

Big fancy ornaments were done away with due to danger to a pedestrian being hit. Same with protruding door handles.

Late model Jaguars can have the "Leaper" cat, but it is spring-loaded to break away if needed. Some others are similar ie Rolls-Royce flying lady.

Hood ornaments were really cool and some from the early days were downright works of art.

I always liked the archer on the Pierce Arrow.

I have a Cobra button on my 65 replica.

I think they started disappearing due to safety concerns for pedestrians but more so due to theft and manufacturers cost.

You used the hood ornaments for sighting-in on pedestrians.
