In the 60s up to the early 80s many European, American and Japanese sedans were offered with 2 doors. Toyota Carina, Ford Consul/Granada, Ford Taunus/Cortina, Opel Kadett and Ascona come to mind.
To me they looked somewhat sportier than their 4 door versions while having a normal rear seat space and full-size rear benches unlike most coupes where the rear roof slopes and rear head- and legroom are limited. A 2-door sedan of course offered a more rigid body than a 4-door. Now when German makes have created the 4-door coupes do you think someone would like a 2-door sedan? I think I'd buy one as I think 2 doors look better but I would prefer my occasional rear seat passengers not to feel cramped. Also a normal boot.
I also miss the Capri/Maverick/Consul Coupe coke-bottle coupes and fastback-shaped sedans of the 70s. I guess today the Mondeo looks like a fastback? I think the current Mustangs are not true descendants of the Capri/Consul coupe which differed from the pony cars.
^yep but they have a sloping roof, making rear head space limited and the annoying B columns obstructing side view. I think a 2-door 3-box body is what I would like. That's only available in more luxo badges like the BMW 2, 4 series and the previous 1 series coupe although it didn't have a 4 door sedan version.
IMO the fastback and liftback shapes don't look that good on today's larger, obese-looking cars. Hence why a new incarnation of the Capri or Consul/Granada Coupe would be next to impossible to look as good as the originals. BMW coupes manage to look like modern versions of the 3 box 2 door sedans of the past like the E21 and E30 somehow, while being very modern as well. I guess their size is much much larger to achieve it. The Accord liftback-shaped sedan is weird and ungainly in comparison.
Back then most models came in two door, four door, and station wagon/estate versions. The recent Honda Accord and Nissan Altima two door coupe didn’t look as svelte nor sporty as their past coupe versions. They did look more sporty than the sedan version but they looked big and bulky. The last generation of Chevrolet Monte Carlo was a two door version of the Impala and it was big and bulky looking compared to previous generations. Some of today’s sedans are so sloped as to appear coupe like.
I think BMW coupes still look mostly 3 box. Ironically, they're also more popular than many fastback-looking coupes, so it seems there is still some demand for a 2 door notchback coupe. Actually, even subcompact sedans sell well, provided they look good (Audi A3 sedan for example).
Sloped 4 door sedans made to look like fastback coupes offer worse rear head room than a more ordinary 3 box sedan or even many 2-door notchback coupes.
