Column shifters are ancient. I am surprised they are offered in police cars but then again, they do need the space that floorshifters usually take up.
I am pretty sure the average person could also use more space in the center console.....so why not put the shifter up on the column out of the way in a space that is not useful for any other purpose?
In automatics I prefer column shifters. Floor shifters require a console and truthfully I prefer the third pd seat/flip up arm rest console deal or bench seating.
I like a column shifter because it does free up the center console. My 83 Ford E150 5.0 had a manual column shifter (3 spd), my 05 F150 has a 4 spd auto Column shifter.
I have a Buick LaCrosse and it has next to no storage space and has a huge center console with the shifter on the floor. Makes no sense. Would rather have the shifter on the column and have the center console be redesigned for storage.

Because floor shifters are cool, sexy, make some people think they know how to shift a stick, but IMO the trend from column to floor--which I consider a huge waste of space--was a cool-driven fad. Too bad.
For cars that still have a mechanical connection from the shift lever (more cars are moving to shift-by-wire so it doesn’t matter), it must be cheaper to have it on the console.
I’m also guessing that it’s safer to have bucket seats up front with a console so that front occupants don’t slide around as much in the event of an accident.

Mine has the column shift without the bench seat.
The odd thing is that the current tendency is a throwback the my very first car, a 1958 Chrysler with a push button shift on the dash. Now push button or knob.
