The national truckers association should lobby for Congress to pass a law granting them variable tax credits against fuel purchase according to the rising cost index of gasoline.

George, the Owner Operator Independent Driver Association (OOIDA) has been pushing a law that would require that ALL of the fuel surcharge that is collected for a shipment actually be paid to the trucker that actually buys the fuel (instead of the broker or carrier skimming all or part of it off) Several previous efforts have failed but a bill cosponsored by Olympia Snow (R-ME) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) just might pass now that fuel prices have gone through the roof. The only problem is that brokers and carriers know all the tricks; they may be forced to give the owner/operator all of the fuel surcharge. But the O/O may suddenly find his rate for the load has been "reduced' so the fuel charge is only the first step in trying to keep these guys honest...

Oh yea and for all those truckers who think striking is going to work good luck. I am sure there are plenty of people who will gladly drive a truck to make a living. It isn't like it requires any special skills.
It takes a different breed of individuals to drive the miles they do, added with all the idiots they put up with, not to mention the stuff they carry. Its a thing where things can go horribly wrong in a split second then you can start counting bodybags. If the American truckers go away for good then everyone will have to put up with mexican truckers to do the job, do you think they give a rats a$$ about any american life when their wheeling it down the road??
