I have a fine black dust on the rims of both our pickups. They are both fourwheel drives. I ought to know about this. But was wondering if one of you good folks could help me out.
Probably it is brake dust, and needs to be cleaned off fairly regularly, if you let it build up it can be a bear to get off, even etch the paint of your wheels (if they are painted). There are specific wheel cleaners available intended to remove this stuff, although whatever you wash the car with regularly will work if it's not allowed to set up too bad.
I would guess that it would be brake dust, next time you change your brake pads consider going over to the ceramic pads you won't get as much brake dust from those.
Everyone is correct, that's what it is. if you go to an auto parts store or even walmart you can get rim cleaner that will take it off. eagle one has a good rim cleaner. that dust you see is normal wear of your brake pads. if you had four wheel disc brakes you would notice it on all four wheels. the reason you see it on disc brakes and not drum is because disc are open to let out the dust where as drum brakes hold in alot of that dust. most of the dust that comes out of drum brakes comes out the back, so it doesn't get all over your wheels. IF YOU WANT TO STOP THAT FROM HAPPENING GET SOME DUST COVERS, they mout behind the wheel. all you do is take the wheel off slide the dust cover on the lug studs and put the wheel back on. these just make the dust blow out the back instead of letting come out through the wheel.
Ford Expeditions are also covered in brake dust on the front wheels. Look at them the next time you see a Ford Expedition. Don't have one myself but notice it REALLY bad on those vehicles.
It's from dust brakes. The best solution for dust brakes not to stick in your rims is simply pissing on all your four rims.... the acid in your **** will help prevent the brake dust from sticking
Just in case you can't go enough to cover both front wheels I found PAM works very well. It's also good for protecting wheels from salt in winter. I don't if urine does that although it's probably salty enough to melt any ice buildup.

Forget all these HOKEY ideas. Good grief....Urine....The smell .... and it's corrosive. Thats a canine solution.
I wouldn't use Pam as it could get on your rotors if you spray while on the car.
Just wash your wheels when it gets built up. It's normal for Disc brakes with metallic pads.
JFRRACING idea would also do the job.
If it gets to be to much for you contact a good brake shop and have them replace your front pads with the new ceramic pads. Raybestos makes a good one called ... Quiet pad.
