Earning its nickname, the Golden State has saved its residents $62 billion in almost two decades thanks to some crafty auto insurance rules, according to a new report.

New Jersey, Hawaii, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania also have served drivers well by keeping insurance rates relatively low, but drivers in other states have watched their costs skyrocket 100% or more between 1989 and 2005, the Consumer Federation of America says.

"Relatively low" compared to what? When I moved to Pennsylvania from Illinois, my insurance rates shot up so high that I had to sell one of my cars before I moved because I could not afford to insure both of them. And that was in Pittsburgh. Had I moved to the Philly area, they would have been double what I was paying in Pittsburgh. When I moved to Chicago, into a neighborhood with far denser traffic and far more car thefts, my insurance rates dropped.

We have the so called government approval and i can't say the rates are cheap. But compared to my neice the rates are cheap compared to what she pays in California. But then the other state fees to own a vehicle are huge compared to where I live.

Massachusetts, I don't think there is a state in the country with more strict and overpriced insurance than Mass. It is such a disliked state by auto insurance companies that none of the major companies will operate in that state, not even Geico. It is completely regulated by the state. Basically the majority of the residents have Commerce or Arbella Insurance, any other choices are so slim most don't know about them.
