i think you and greatday take me to literally and sometimes miss the point i am trying to make.
suv's have generally become synonomous with "excessive consumption".
when i say that suv's are adding to our trade deficit and enriching countries hostile to us i mean that "excessive consumption" (eg driving a gas guzzler, rv etc,) is adding to our trade deficit and enriching countries hostile to us.
in ww11 rationing was introduce to curb consumption. at the same time there were things which weren't rationed but that didn't stop the powers that be from actively promoting a culture of saving ie waste not want not!
i am just trying to make people understand the link between our excessive habits and the demise of our economy and it is time that we as individuals start taking responsibility for our consumption before it really takes us down

I don't buy that families with kids "need" SUVs. We have 2 kids and a Toyota Corolla carts them around just fine. Somehow 20 years ago, people didn't "need" SUVs. And now they do??
I hate SUV's....I think a majority of the people who drive the big gas guzzlers are just trendy lemmings.

Do you what we had 20 years ago???????
Station Wagons.
Yep, Station Wagons. The modern SUV is nothing more than the replacement for the Station Wagon.
Don't you remember the big Oldsmobile or Chevrolet or Ford Station Wagons?
And putting 2/4/6 kids, with their soccer gear, with the Ice Chests and soccer nets in a Toyota Corolla can be a little bit tight. Then, if your kids are in Scouting and you go on the campouts - WOW - that Toyota probably just will not cut it -

Station wagons should make a comeback. They're much better on gas than SUVs.....example, there used to be a Honda Accord wagon until the mid 90's....that would be a good alternative to an SUV....but Lemmings wanted big monster truck SUVs, so companies stopped producing wagons.
I don't know about 6 kids (not many people have 6 kids these days), but we get 2 kids (one of which is a baby), a stroller, and baseball equipment into the Corolla, and its not one bit cramped. We just went away for the weekend, and we can;t just pack luggage with a baby.....pack n play, walker, stroller, etc etc, along with all of our luggage...fit just fine in the car.

The station wagons of 'ole got far worse gas mileage than modern SUV's MrKrabs.
And, far from being "big monster truck SUV's", most are not "monster trucks". The Ford Escape, the Honda CRV etc - most are not all that big. And most get pretty darn decent gas mileage to boot.
Oh, to be sure - there are a few out there that are pretty big - the original Hummer, and the H2 - the Ford Expedition - but, most are about the same length as mid size car.
We love our SUV's - they are comfortable - roomy - can carry a large load and tow what we need to tow. Being high off the ground, we can go off road (which we do) and, inasmuch as we live off the beaten track - on a dirt road that gets pretty rough after a rain, they make sure we can get in and out -

Mom has a 2002 Toyota Corolla and it is a Great Car... it's actually better than great and I posted about it before...
Anyway, my brother, in his 40's has three children, ages 1,3 and 5 and it was physically impossible to put their three child seats in the Corolla and close the doors... I tried
I drive a 31 mpg small station wagon and had the same problem with the car seats...
When I was a child, even on school field trips, coach would just tell us kids to scoot over and make room for one more... today, it's called Child Endangerment and against the law...
My brother owns a Dodge Durango and needs the room with 3 toddlers he also coaches soccer for the 5 year old and every Saturday, the Durango is loaded with his kids, kids on the team and gear...
Child Seat laws changed forever how we buy cars... I know several GrandParents that traded in small cars for mini-vans or cars with more seating just so the family can go in one car instead of needing two...
I truly believe Child Seat Laws played a bigger part than many realizing in the up-sizing of the family car...

when I was talking about SUV's, I'm not so much referring to small SUV's like the CRV, Rav 4, etc, as I am the Hummers, Explorers, Expeditions, Yukons, Suburbans, Durangos, etc.
