If everyone drove a small car, there'd be much less of a safety issue underlying driving a small car. SO... y'all who complain about gas prices so much.... get rid of your big cars first. If you survive, and you start the trend toward smaller cars, I will eventually trade my Thunderbird for a Corolla. You first.

If everyone traded their gas hogs for 35 mpg plus, the demand for gas would go down and gas would be cheaper.

My Brother in law and I both drive SUV's. We are both in the Military so I would think twice about calling us terrorist supporters.I think it is funny htat SUV drivers get the blame for gas prices. So I guess there was a sudden spike in the number of SUV sales this past few months and thats what drove up the prices huh? PLEASE, if gas is 12 cents and 20 cents in Saudi Arbia and UAE how come it's $4 here? HMM maybe the stock market and big oil have something to do with that.

Most compact cars these days are fairly safe. They all tend to come with side airbags standard as well. Crash tests with side airbags are MUCH MUCH better than without them. Subaru makes very safe small cars. The Impreza has a 5 star front and side crash test rating.

from my perspective this thread has run its course. there seem to be too many posters who'd rather discuss semantics then debate the underlying issue which is that excessive consumption of gasoline is enriching those hostile to us and bankrupting our country. i am going to continue the debate on my other thread:

I was in the Air Force for the 1st Gulf War, and yes, being forced to bow down to Saudi Arabia for their oil means we're supporting terrorism. Where were those suicide pilots from on 9-11 again???

SUVs didn't cause the recent spike, but there are so many uselessly on the road in this country that you can't deny they increase overall demand, and higher demand means higher prices. I'm subsidizing soccer moms in Suburbans gas habits, whether I want to or not.

I suppose that any foreign country that doesn't buy American goods are also terrorists... please... this is a world economy and blundering around saying oil = terrorists is stupid... oil is also produced in england, the U.S. and many other countries... if you don't want Saudi oil then the government can stop buying Saudi oil and you will see fourfold increase in gas prices whereas everyone else will see their gas prices drop... last time I checked, anything but a bicycle consumes a lot of gasoline.. perhaps we should all be riding on bicycles.. driving cars = supporting terrorism... there you go...

There are several legitimate reasons for people to own SUVs of various sizes, especially those large ones, and it wouldn't be right to say "these people should be charged with treason". I know I wouldn't own a gas-guzzling SUV like the Chevy Suburban, but some people who have families need them. They may have also bought those large SUVs back when gasoline was cheap, nobody anticipated the ridiculous increase in gas prices we've seen in the last few months, and the only reason they drive them is probably because they don't want to spend a fortune on a new vehicle.

I have a Nissan SUV that gets about 24-25 miles per gallon on the highway and I don't see myself getting rid of it anytime in the near future. Besides, I don't buy gasoline from companies that use OPEC oil, like Mobil/Exxon, Shell, CITGO, and Texaco.
