Try hauling a large piece of machinery in the back of a Fusion or such. Won't fit and it will make the bumper drag the ground. OR if it is something that is an "inhaliation hazard" and is REQUIRED by federal law to be in an "OPEN AREA" one NEEDS and MUST have a pickup truck to haul such.
Must be nice to have an easy office job Go find out how your company exists. Do they make and manufacturer something? Do they transport goods? There are MANY, MANY industries that would not survive one hour w/o having large vehicles be it personal large vehicles that are required by outside salespeople or delivery personel. Then the small business owner that has the 1 vehicle he uses to operate a business to support his family AND be their mode of transportation.
Go ahead and let them charge even MORE than they already do for people that MUST have a large truck/vehicle to operate a business. We ALREADY DO PAY OUT THE NOSE! All it will do is increase the prices on EVERYTHING you buy and consume.

Why do these people feel so invincible?
A few months ago, I hit a Hummer H2 that was trying to cut me off. Her rear bumper caught my front bumper and she spun and rolled 3 times and was ejected. Fortunately for me, I was driving my 2008 84 passenger IC school bus. (a 35,000 lb, rear- engine behemoth). It was touch and go for a while, but she lived and I'm glad of that....but I'll bet she'll never forget her lesson that traffic laws apply to Hummers too....especially when outweighed 5 to 1.

touched your bumper and rolled.....interesting!
they do seem roll over pretty easily imo

So now outside salespeople "need" SUV's? Huh? My father worked in outside sales for a manufacturer most of his life and always had mid-sized sedans as a company vehicle. Now all of a sudden salespeople need Durangos and Yukons?

i have admitted that my heading on this thread was a tad (ok, a lot!)melodramatic, but it served its purpose and drew a decent audience compared to my (imo) more thought provoking thread on "gas consumption sinking our economy?" thread!
as to to first 3-5 lines it almost seems as though we have found some common ground here ultrarunner. isn't that nice?

You mean the mall parking lot or the Starbucks drive-thru is not considered "off road???"

Yep, when people realize that there IS a great big world out there of people that NEED such vehicles. Stop making them and restricting the people that can buy them and you will see an entire economy spin totally down the toilet faster than you can say Suburban.

Had one outside sales person that one time traded in is midsize SUV for a smaller car. We paid him a car allowance that pretty much made his payment. Paid for his gas as well. He wanted something "sporty" as he was recently divorced. The 2nd day after he had to come borrow my husbands pickup. After the 3rd time in as many days my husband was LIVID!!! We were paying for him to drive a car that was TOTALLY USELESS!!! He could NOT fit ANYTHING to do w/ our business in it to get to a customer. Remember outside salespeople also have to make emergency deliveries to customers often. Gosh, what business are you people in that is NOT effected in ANYWAY by businesses that MUST have larger vehicles.

And a mother dropping her kid off at soccer practice or waiting in the Starbucks drive thru for a latte or going to the mall or driving to the office ALONE does not constitute NEED. I realize there are people who have a legitimate need for a larger vehicle, but lets not sit here and blow smoke up people's arses and pretend that they're the majority.
Its trendy suburban "McMansion on a cul-de-sac" "keep up the Joneses" materialistic lemming types that are the typical SUV driver these days. The types that can't give up their precious careers and material things to raise their kids, so they have their children raised by daycare centers.....while they claim they "need" the multiple incomes, they live in new housing developments and drive $30,000 SUV's.
