Now that the discussion has turned back to the value of time versus fuel, this post deserves a bump.

In a diesel pickup, slowing from 80 to 65 mph, the added time versus fuel calculation came out to $50 an hour. A heavy truck would most likely double or triple that.

You want to save fuel? Forget 55, properly inflate your tires. Plus you'll improve your braking and handling too.

Wrong logic?.. their pay would be less !! (less miles in same hours) = hurting the driver's wallet...

I've always got paid by the route in commercial driving (based on miles and cargo, not time spent to get there), and yes the 55 mph of the 70's hurt my wallet (less pay for hours spent). The real killer is the very restrictive time limits imposed on commercial drivers (some for good reason). DOT limits your hours... and economy limits your speed... expeditor's have hefty fines for being late on your cargo...+ spouse wants you home a few hours / day, and bank wants your truck payment, ON TIME...means folks are yanking your chain from all sides.

a truckers comment as a 25 year truck driver with over 4 million accident free miles heres my take. most major truck lines have their trucks to run 65 to 70 miles an hour computer controlled. i.e jb hunt, raven, swift to name a few mostly to stop tickets. indpendent drivers mostly are not. my truck is is governed at 97 mph not that i run that.as for fuel savings i get my best mileage at 75 mph at 55 mph i get 1.3mpg less. as for the accident theories heres my from all those miles on the road. most are drivers not paying attention heres a few i see daily working on the computer while driving (police are the worst at this as well as realtors and salesmen) women putting on makeup, reading news papers ,reading contracts, and people trying to get out from behind those afore mentioned 65 mph trucks, oh almost forgot sex. YES WHILE DRIVING! also as mentiond by other posters red lights that are not timed so you stop every 2 blocks.

I'd rather see higher speed limits and more toll roads. I'm not saying I want that.. but I would prefer it.
